The finals format for the A-League Men’s 2021/22 season has been revamped, with a four weeks finals series set to reshape the end of season drama for next season.
The team that finishes third on the table will host the side that comes sixth and fourth will play fifth where both of these games will be a single legged tie.
The teams that finish both first and second will play two qualifiers over home and away semifinals over two weekend where the A-League Men’s Grands Final will follow on the fourth weekend.
This means that there will be a two-legged semi final, following the format in many other footballing leagues across the world that have finals series
Speaking on the new format, A-Leagues commissioner Greg O’Rourke welcomed the new system.
“The new format rewards the sides that finish first and second by eliminating the one-off semifinals, and it rewards the fans who we know love finals football,” said O’Rourke.
“This season is a landmark moment for football in Australia.
“We are proud to be able to deliver another full and action packed season for fans to access in more ways than ever before.
“Last season we saw the emergence of some incredible talent, and those football stories will once again be on display in stadiums this season.:
“After the excitement of last season generated by a new wave of Australian talent, we think the new campaign promises to deliver even more captivating drama for supporters and viewers.”
The rest of the season’s fixtures have been released, including the Mariners New Year’s Eve game, a plethora of derbies and more.
