Hume City’s Michael Weier’s stellar form in the NPL Victoria over the past several seasons has been rewarded, with Arthur Papas adding the 24-year-old ‘keeper to his ranks for the upcoming season
Weier expressed his gratefulness for the opportunity to be compete at the A-League level.
“It’s such an amazing opportunity to represent a proud club like Newcastle Jets,” he said.
“I’m excited to work hard alongside a great team whilst being surrounded by quality coaches and staff, and passionate supporters.”
Manager, Arthur Papas said; “We are very happy to have secured Michael for the upcoming season.
“Michael has been the outstanding NPL goalkeeper for some time now where he also captained his side Hume City.
“Since training with us Michael has impressed everybody with his character and his qualities, and the goalkeeper position is the same as any other position where we need to have players competing daily.”
NPL Victoria commentator Chris Gleeson spoke to Kick360 regarding the qualities that Weier will be able to add to an already impressive defence.
“Michael gets his opportunity to play in the A League after working so hard at NPL level to get his chance” Gleeson said.
“Weier has a professional drive that he brings to his training and has a very strong competitive mindset. Still only in his early 20’s Michael has played over 150 NPL games and will enter the A-League with plenty of experience.
“As well as being named a multiple goalkeeper of the year in NPL Victoria, Michael is a tall and very athletic keeper who is brilliant at reflex saves and dominates the air but he also is very comfortable playing out from the back and has an incredible arm on him that starts counter attacks quickly.
“He is also a strong leader and for the past two seasons has been Hume City’s captain and I have no doubt he will push Duncan for the number one keeper spot this year in Arthur Papas’ squad.”
