Following Heidelberg United’s capture of Ivan Franjic last week, NPL NSW counterparts Sydney Olympic have announced the signing of former A-League Men’s and Sunderland striker Roy O’Donovan for the FFA Cup Round of 32 fixtures and the 2022 NPL NSW campaign.
O’Donovan, who was recently released from the Newcastle Jets is commonly regarded as one of the most consistent foreign strikers in recent times, having made over 125 appearances in his six years down under.
Prior to this, the Irish born Australian citizen had plied his trade at Sunderland where he made 17 appearances and also has had stints in Scotland, the lower tiers of England, Singapore, Ireland and Indonesia.
In the most recently completed A-League Men’s season, O’Donovan scored seven goals in 25 games for the Newcastle Jets.
Manager of Olympic Ante Juric stated that O’Donovan’s presence was important with the current playing group at Olympic.
“Roy is a great addition to our squad, he brings experience and he is a proven goal scorer at the highest of levels. Roy is another important piece to our team as we look to succeed as a team and club this season and beyond. We are looking forward to him joining the team in training”
O’Donovan, who had previously spoken to Kick360 during his time as a free agent expressed his excitement at lining up for one of Australia’s most historic football clubs.
“I am as willing as ever to play and support this great Club in both the upcoming FFA Cup match against Sydney FC and the 2022 NPL season. There are few Clubs like Sydney Olympic in Australia, a great tradition and history, supported by passionate fans that want success for this Club, I will be trying my best to contribute to the team and help bring success to this Club to make the fans proud, I like the look of our squad, many young aspiring players combined with some experienced players, I can’t wait to join them on the park”.
O’Donovan and Sydney Olympic are set to take on 2021 A-League Men’s finalists Sydney FC on Wednesday the 24th of November in the FFA Cup Round of 32 at Belmore Sports Ground.
