Socceroos stalwart Mathew Leckie has agreed to sign for Melbourne City on a free transfer for the next A-League season.
The 30-year-old Leckie joins the A-League premiers on a three-year deal following a four year stint at Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin in which he played 17 times this campaign, starting the final three games this season.
Leckie is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest crafty modern wingers, commencing his career in Australia and progressing into Europe into the Bundesliga where he had remained in Germany for ten years.
Leckie returns home to Melbourne, where he first began his career at NPL club Bulleen Lions, subsequently making his A-League debut for Adelaide United as an 18-year-old.
Over the course of his time in Germany, he plied his trade for clubs such as FC Ingolstadt 04, FSV Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach where he netted 10 goals in 139 Bundesliga appearances.
The 64-time Socceroo previously expressed his desire to leave the German based club, citing a lack of game-time and consistency as the pivotal reasons behind his disaffection.
The Melbourne-born star recently scored in Australia’s 3-0 Victory over Kuwait in the Socceroos return to international action.

“I’ve been talking with all the Melbourne City players in the Socceroos squad, and I can’t wait to get started, to get to work and bring home some more silverware for the fans.”
