The Western Sydney Wanderers today have announced their new captain for the upcoming A-League Men’s season, being former Socceroo Rhys Williams.
Williams joined the club this past off-season following a stint with Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiyah where he also captained the club on occasion.
Williams, who has played for the Socceroos 14 times has also had stints with English club Middlesborough, the Perth Glory and the Melbourne Victory where he won the 2018 A-League championship.
A commanding central defender, Williams takes over the captaincy from Dylan McGowan who departed the club in the off season to join Scottish Championship club Kilmarnock.
Rhys Williams stated that he was elated and honoured to take on this role with the club.
“It is a privilege and an honour to be named the captain of this great club,” said Williams.
“I would like to thank head coach Carl Robinson and the club for giving me this honour and opportunity to lead the club in their historic tenth season.
“Having only been at the club for a few months, it feels like I have been here for years and I feel at home at the Wanderers.
“This is a major milestone in my professional career and I hope to make not only my family, but the people of Western Sydney proud.”
Wanderers manager, Carl Robinson also provided some insight into Williams’ qualities on the pitch in a leadership sense.
“It was a difficult decision because this year we have so many talented senior players, who all have excellent leadership qualities in very different ways,” said Robinson.
“Rhys is a very good person both on-and-off the field and has values that align with the people of Western Sydney.
“He is the epitome of a good teammate and leader, he is very vocal but details orientated in his communication.
“He also supports the young players that we are trying to develop here at the Wanderers and has the respect of our key senior players.”
CEO of the Wanderers, John Tsatsimas also wished Williams a congratulations on the new role with the club.
“Since arriving at the club, Rhys has been a fantastic leader and individual in our pre-season preparations,” said Tsatsimas.
“Rhys has led the group with pride, respect and honour and we look forward to him and the team having all the success this season.
